Since its inception in 2012, the Achievement Initiative (AI) has partnered with eight Harlem public schools to improve student engagement and whole school success. AI is a school-based model in which a Licensed Master Social Worker serves as a full-time Program Coordinator at each partner school and is responsible for coordinating and implementing program services. Under the supervision of this Program Coordinator, Columbia University undergraduate and graduate students provide a variety of services to students at each partner school. All Achievement Initiative team members make a minimum one-year commitment to their partner schools to ensure that continuity of services and meaningful relationships are established. The AI program is fully integrated at every partner school, with a school-based office and staff, to establish a truly collaborative effort to promote whole school transformation.
AI targets schools in the Harlem community that are in need of additional support in order to be successful. In all of our partner schools, there is a critical need for student support services, including social-emotional and behavioral learning, and counseling. As a result, AI primarily provides individual and group counseling to students, social emotional and behavioral curriculum development and facilitation, and professional development for school staff. Depending on the needs of the school, however, AI provides comprehensive support services to promote the healthy development of the whole child, including:
Individual and Group Counseling After-School & Summer Programming
College and Financial Aid Preparation Community Service
Workforce Development Programming Family Engagement
Academic Tutoring/SAT/Regents Preparation Professional Development
Advisory Curriculum Development/Facilitation Mentoring
