ENSURING SUCCESS

Founded in 2012, the Achievement Initiative (AI) is a program under the auspices of the Columbia University School of Social Work that partners with high-need Harlem public schools to provide comprehensive engagement and support services to students and their families. AI utilizes a collaborative model to create sustainable partnerships between Columbia University, public schools, and community resources to encourage student achievement by supporting students in their academic, social and emotional development. Additional supports are provided to families and partner school staff to support whole family and whole school success.

The Achievement Initiative is composed of a team of licensed social workers, graduate social work and education students, and undergraduate students who believe that all students have the right to: experience success in school; to be exposed to diverse academic, social, and emotional development opportunities; to know what it feels like to have people believe in them and to believe in themselves; to have their strengths recognized and their challenges overcome; to envision a positive and productive future for themselves and to work hard towards achieving that vision.

Our goal is to ensure that students are actively engaged in school, are provided the skills and resources they need to be academically, socially, and emotionally successful, remain in school, graduate from high school, and enroll in post-secondary education or enter the workforce in meaningful positions.
